Our finished DepicT piece was titled 'Internet Blues' (watch above)
Mise-en-Scene:
Positive points-
- The scenery was believable and had sufficient space allowing for varied shots which meant we had good angles and convincing environments.
- I thought the idea behind our DepicT piece was unique and this allowed us to break convention and try new things out, overall this kept our audience engaged with the production.
- Continuity and flow of the finished piece is somewhat jagged and not polished enough, for example the shot where me and George walk in together we change pace and position when the camera angle changes.
- The area in which the majority of our production was set (media room) was usually being used by other groups for editing etc. which caused a reduction in production.
Camerawork:
Positive points-
- Since we weren't being marked on the finished product we were able to experiment with differing shot angles, for example when I walked out of the door it was a panning POV shot from George's eyes which was a relatively successful shot except it was a major reason why our overall time surpassed the 90 second limit, but because of the unusuall use of shots it kept our production fresh and held the attention of the veiwer.
- The shot types we used were relevant to the action such as close ups of characters face for the reaction of the computers being switched off, this prevented the alienation of the audience and helped to immerse people.
Room for improvement-
- A couple of the shots actually cropped out some of the characters and although it isn't a requirement to do so it was considered to be a bit of a distraction.
- In one particular shot there was actually a reflection of the cameraman (me) and although we originally edited it out we had to add it back to the production to promote the overall flow of the following shot.
Editing:
Positive points-
- We included a time lapse with the clock and it was really effective in the way it was done, as it was break time we were able to shoot a continuous 20 minute clock shot without any background noise or people walking past.
- we cut sound and layered it well between scenes, for example when I star writing the note then it cuts to a shot of George you can still hear the marker writing against the post it note which added depth and ambient sound in an otherwise quiet room.
Room for improvement-
- Shoot multiple shots of the same scene in order to allow for deeper editing options, this is particularly helpful if you were to spot a continuity error because you could simply replace the shot with another and edit it accordingly.
- communicate more with members of the group while editing to allow for fresh ideas and opinions, this will ensure every member is satisfyed with the product as they have had an input and also feel as though their opinion is valid leading to increased group productivity.
Sound:
Positive points-
- Louie composed the soundtrack for our production which allowed him to fine tune it in order to fit well with the corresponding scene, this not only sounded good but also got rid of any copywright issues that would have otherwise occurred.
- For the most part the dialogue was clear and made sense
Room for improvement-
- My dialogue in particular didn't have enough energy behind it and because I naturally have a sort of mumbling style of speech you couldn't really tell what I was saying, other than that I thought George and Louie were very clear.
- In the scene where I am talking (mumbling) someone opens the door and further increases the difficulty of hearing what is said, next time we should either reshoot the scene or dub over it.
